Vehicular movement on the Lokoja-Abuja Road was disrupted on Tuesday for hours following protest by students of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja.
The students blocked both ends of the road when news filtered in that their colleague, a female Higher National Diploma student, had died of the wounds she sustained from a scuffle with a commercial motorcycle operator.
The female student, who died in the early hours of Tuesday, was allegedly stabbed by the motorcycle rider at Adankolo area last weekend following disagreement over transport fare.
The students trooped out of their campus and seized Dangote Cement Company truck laden with cement to block the highway.
They set the truck and several motorcycles ablaze.
Motorists coming in and out of Lokoja were not spared as their vehicles were vandalised.
Passengers travelling to and from the Northern and Southern parts of the country jumped out of their vehicles and ran inside nearby houses and shops for safety.
As at the time of filing this report, three trucks load of anti-riot policemen deployed to the trouble spot were now on ground and chasing the rioters away.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP William Aya, said the situation was under control but no arrest had been made.
