Kuda Microfinance Bank (Kuda MFB) has dissociated itself from the treatment of a customer by the police on Tuesday at its Yaba office in Lagos.
A video of the police manhandling the customer went viral on Twitter, eliciting outrage from the public.
Twitter user @Yusgafmotors shared the video, accusing the bank of having a hand in it.
“kudabank @kudabankhelp this how you treat you customers. Minus me today. This is part one it will not end like this. Nothing must happen to my brother,” he wrote.
The bank, however, said in a statement on Wednesday that its staff had nothing to do with the incident.
“We wish to unequivocally state that Kuda Microfinance Bank Ltd (Kuda MFB) does not condone or support violence in any manner, particularly against its own customers,” the statement read.
The bank attracts customers with promises of little or no charges for transactions compared to traditional banks.
It further said in the statement that the customer failed to co-operate with the authorities, leading to an escalation of the matter.
“It is truly unfortunate that the customer’s failure to co-operate with the law enforcement officers unfolded in the manner that it did, particularly as the customer was being apprehended by the members of the Nigerian Police Force further to their investigation into alleged criminal activity on the customer’s account,” it added.
