Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan could not hold back his excitement over Anikulapo bagging the award for best overall film at the 2023 Africa Movies Academy Awards (AMAA).
The event took place on Sunday at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Ikeja, Lagos. The awards gala celebrated the best of African cinema, with filmmakers, actors and other film practitioners from across the globe converging under the same roof.
Produced and directed by Kunle Afolayan, Anikulapo also won best achievement in production design, an award the filmmaker dedicated to the late Pat Nebo.
In his appreciation message shared via Instagram on Monday, the 49-year-old said he feels honoured and appreciated, he also congratulated his fellow nominees and winners.

“Award for Best Achievement in production design (Kunle Afolayan “Anikulapo”) Dedicated to the veteran Pat Nebo. Congratulations to all the nominees and winners.

Reality star turned actor Tobi Bakre won for best actor for his role in Brotherhood, winning against the likes of Richard Mofe Damijo who was nominated for 4-4-44, Marc Zinga for DRC, Febabdo Kamugisha for The Fallen Advocate, Justine Murichii for Shimoni and Mike Danon for Sira.
Actress Nse Ikpe-Etim also won for her role in Izu Ojukwu’s 4-4-44, making her the first Nigerian actress to win the best actress in a leading role category after Sola Sobowale won for King of Boys in 2019.
