Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has been selected to participate in the African Creative TV Initiative (ACTV), a programme designed to empower African TV creators with the skills and tools needed to compete globally.
Kunle shared the news on his Instagram page on Wednesday.
He will be joined by fellow renowned film director Bolanle Austen-Peters.
The initiative will take the participants to Los Angeles, Washington DC, Virginia and Atlanta where they will take part in a series of workshops and networking events.
Spearheaded by the USC (University of Southern California) Southern School of Cinematic Arts through the American Film Showcase (AFS) and in collaboration with the US Department of State, the program fosters leadership and creative excellence across Africa’s burgeoning TV industry.
This opportunity provides participants a platform to forge connections with global networks and explore potential collaborations that could transform the African television landscape.
Kunle expressed his excitement about joining the program, emphasising how it offers African storytellers the chance to elevate their narratives and showcase the continent’s rich culture to a global audience.
Beyond individual growth, the initiative marks a significant moment for African television as it shifts the global focus toward the region’s diverse stories and creative talents.
In a related effort, the Middleburg Film Festival in collaboration with the US Department of State and the American Film Showcase will host a delegation of leading Kenyan and Nigerian filmmakers.
They will share their work and discuss the evolving role of African cinema in the global entertainment industry.
This initiative is a pivotal step toward positioning African content on the world stage, offering resources and opportunities that ensure African stories resonate with audiences worldwide.
The African Creative TV (ACTV) initiative focuses on professional development and networking opportunities for television writers, producers and other technical fields such as art direction, cinematography, editing and line producing.
