Actor Kunle Remi who portrayed the central character Saro in Anikulapo has been noticeably missing from the list of returning cast members for the show’s second season.
Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan recently took to Instagram to officially unveil both the returning and new cast members for the highly anticipated second season of Anikulapo.
In a series of posts on Monday, he confirmed that Netflix has renewed the show, building on the success of its first season.
The director also offered a glimpse into the upcoming season which will delve deeper into Nigerian history and culture, touching on the transatlantic slave trade.
He captioned the post, “Unveiling the new stars/talents of Anikulapo series… Back and bigger than ever. Netflix confirms new season of Ankulapo!!!!!
We are thrilled to announce that Netflix has officially renewed Anikulapo for another exciting season!”
Returning cast members include cactors such as Sola Sobowale, Bimbo Ademoye, Gabriel Afolayan, Owo Ogunde, Aisha Lawal and Eyiyemi Afolayan.
However, the absence of Kunle Remi who played Saro—the pivotal character in season one—has raised some eyebrows.
Saro’s character was central to the first season, depicting a man seeking a better life who faces a tragic turn of events due to his affair with the king’s wife Arolake.
After an untimely death, Saro is resurrected by Akala a mystical bird capable of granting and taking life.
With his newfound power over death, Saro rises to prominence in the village of Ojumo but succumbs to pride, leading to his downfall when he begins making reckless demands to raise the dead.
The first installment of Anikulapo, a Netflix original premiered on September 30, 2022.
While Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre began streaming on March 1, 2024. Both were written by Shola Dada, directed and produced by Kunle Afolayan.
