The Labour Party (LP) has affirmed its commitment to fielding Peter Obi as its presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for a rematch against President Bola Tinubu.
LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, made this known on Wednesday during Channels Television’s Politics Today, stating that Obi, a former Anambra State governor and the party’s 2023 flagbearer, remains their preferred choice to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Tinubu will not have it easy in 2027. We are coming back with Peter Obi so that they will know we are serious,” Arabambi said.
Obi finished third in the 2023 presidential election behind Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
However, the LP believes he can garner greater support to unseat the incumbent in the next election cycle.
Arabambi also dismissed claims that the Labour Party was on the verge of collapse, maintaining that the party remains stable despite the resignation of Kenneth Okonkwo on Wednesday.
He described Okonkwo’s exit as a relief, accusing him of working for President Tinubu and the ruling APC.
“We wish Kenneth Okonkwo well. His resignation is good riddance to bad rubbish. He should stop speaking about the Labour Party,” Arabambi said.
“There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party. The claim that LP is heading for extinction is simply the imagination of our detractors,” he added.
The party spokesman further stressed that the LP would not tolerate disloyalty as it strategises for the next elections.
“In 2027, we will not condone political rascality in our party. The National Chairman is on a reconciliatory mission, and that is why you see some people becoming jittery,” Arabambi stated.
