Lagos Assembly declares Obasa’s impeachment final, warns against disruption

Mudashiru Obasa

The Lagos State House of Assembly has reiterated that the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa remains valid and final, despite his rejection of the decision.

In a statement signed by Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode on behalf of the Assembly, the lawmakers reaffirmed their unified support for the new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.

They maintained that Obasa’s removal on January 13 followed due process and had the endorsement of over two-thirds of the House members.

“There is no ambiguity. Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa was impeached, and nothing has changed,” the statement read, emphasizing the Assembly’s commitment to good governance and collaboration with other arms of government.

Obasa had earlier rejected the impeachment, claiming it was not conducted in line with established procedures and insisting he remained Speaker.

The Assembly, however, dismissed his stance as “uncalled for and unparliamentary,” stressing that the House, representing constituencies across Lagos, has the constitutional authority to remove principal officers.

“We appeal to the former Speaker to embrace peace and harmony as his current posture risks heating up the polity, which is not in the best interest of Lagos,” the statement added.

The lawmakers also warned that any attempt to disrupt the Assembly’s unity would be firmly resisted.

With Rt. Hon. Meranda now at the helm, the Assembly pledged to uphold its mandate of delivering peace and good governance to the people of Lagos.

“Peace we want in Lagos, and peace we will achieve,” the statement concluded.

The political standoff continues, but the Assembly has left no doubt that Obasa’s tenure as Speaker has officially ended.
