A freshman at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) Ogbomoso, Oyo State has died after he slumped during workout at the school’s sports complex.
Moyosore Akinde of the Department of Biochemistry was said to have slumped while jogging at the weekend.
Akinde died while he was being taken to the hospital.
The institution’s spokesman, Akin Fadeyi, said the cause of the freshman’s death has not been established.
Fadeyi said that the cause of death would have been known if the deceased had made it to the hospital.
“You know that LAUTECH is a non-residential institution and, everybody has access to the sport facilities.
“He (the deceased) is not the only one that has been using the facilities. But, no one can say what happened,” Fadeyi said.
Vice-Chancellor of LAUTECH, Michael Ologunde, has ordered that the institution’s sports centre be closed for three days in honour of the deceased.
Prof. Ologunde described the death as ‘another black episode in the history of the university’.
“We never expected this at a time that our students were just resuming for academic activities, at a time that we were aiming at unbroken academic calendar.
“Our prayer at this time was for God to grant his parents and relations the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss, while stopping all these unfortunate incidences in LAUTECH,” he said.
The freshman’s death comes weeks after two students of the same university lost their lives in a road accident on May 21.
