Super Eagles skipper, Mikel John Obi, is almost certain to leave Chelsea in January.
Mikel, 29, is yet to make a single appearance for Antonio Conte’s side this season and will most likely be farmed out in the winter transfer.
The midfielder who is currently the Blues second longest serving player behind skipper, John Terry, is set to end his illustrious 11 year career at Stamford Bridge.
“Talks were held between Mikel and the manager. As for now he has been told he can leave in January, mind you his contract is set to expire in the summer” the midfielder’s representative told Owngoalnigeria.
“There’s every possibility for him to leave Chelsea either on loan or permanently in January. But the summer looks more likely.
“Every story must have an end. After 11 seasons, Mikel wants to move on and so do Chelsea too.”
With a departure eminent, we take a look at four possible destinations Mikel could find himself.
- Turkish League
Mikel has always been linked with a move to the Turkish Super Liga. Fenerbahçe, Besiktas and Galatasaray have at some point expressed interest in the Chelsea no 12 who could be tempted to take-up one of the offers.
- Chinese Super League
Another possible option for Mikel is the Chinese League which is gradually becoming a haven for African players. Super Eagles and ex-Chelsea teammates, Obafemi Martins and Demba Ba, respectively are among a few currently plying their trade in the Asian nation.
- Major League Soccer
Mikel might also be nurturing the prospect of joining former Chelsea mate, Frank Lampard, in the Major League Soccer (MLS). The American league is a preferred choice for players approaching their 30’s and the Nigerian, at 29, could consider the option.
- Premier League
Mikel, who has spent almost all his club career in England, might fancy remaining in the Premier League. The midfielder’s family and language barrier could militate against a move abroad.
