Nigerian champions Lobi Stars of Makurdi have qualified for the group phase of the CAF Champions League following a 3-3 aggregate draw with Kenya’s Gor Mahia
Mahia won the first leg of this first round tie 3-1 in Nairobi a week ago but could not defend their two-goal margin, eventually crashing out on away goals rule after losing 2-0 on Saturday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
Lobi Stars dominated the contest from the start but had to wait until the 70th minute to score the game’s opening goal through Sikiru Alimi.
Alimi netted his second of the game three minutes before regulation time to send his team into the next round of the competition.
The Nigerians benefitted from the valuable goal they scored at Kasarani Stadium, as they locked out Gor Mahia from getting on the scored board.
Gor will now drop to the Caf Confederation Cup, just like was the case last year.
