A 37-year-old man, Samson Bayonle, was on Thursday arraigned at an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for alleged theft of 64, 822 U.S. dollars.
Bayonle is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.
The Police Prosecutor, Insp. Wewe Adegbayi, told the court that the accused committed the offence with one person still at large on November 6 in Lagos and Oyo states.
Adegbayi said that the accused collected the money from the complainant’s account through the Automated Teller Machine (ATM).
“The accused modified his ATM card to dollar denominations and hacked into the complainant’s account in Unity Bank Plc.,’’ he said.
The police prosecutor said that the offence contravened Sections 287 and 323(2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a three-year jail term for offenders.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Counsel to the accused, Mr Olusegun Adaranijo, urged the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms, pledging that he would not jump bail.
In his ruling, Magistrate B.I Bakare, granted the accused bail in the sum of N5 million, with two sureties in like sum.
He said that one of the sureties should own a property within the court’s jurisdiction.
Bakare said that the two sureties should deposit N50,000 each with the Chief Registrar of the court.
He later adjourned the case until Jan. 12, 2018 for mention.
