An unidentified man has appeared in a viral video boasting of setting fire on Deborah, a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, for alleged blasphemy.
The man spoke to a camera with rage that he lit the fire that was consuming Deborah’s body in the background.
“I’m the one that killed her and set her ablaze. This is the matchstick I used in setting her on fire,” the man said in Hausa, showing off the match box.
Deborah is reported to have blasphemed against Prophet Muhammad by describing a message about the prophet as “nonsense” on a WhatsApp group meant for academics.
According to a student who witnessed the incident, the female student was first evacuated to the security post of the school following threats to her safety.
But the mob pursued her to the security post and overpowered the personnel there.
A video of her being beaten and stoned has been shared multiple times on social media.
This is not the first time this would be happening in northern Nigeria.
In 2016, a woman Bridget Agbahime was killed by a mob at Kofar Wambai market in Kano for alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad.
In 2020, an upper Sharia Court in the Hausawa Filin Hockey area of Kano State sentenced 22-year-old Yahaya Sharif-Aminu to death over blasphemy in a song he circulated via WhatsApp.
