A 28-year-old man Akinola Pelumi, on Friday, appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court over alleged possession of Indian hemp.
Pelumi, whose address was not given, is facing a charge of possession of Indian hemp.
The Police Prosecutor, Insp Olumide Bamigbade, told the court that the defendant committed the offense on February 12, at about 9:00 a.m. in Ado-Ekiti.
Bamigbade said that the defendant had in his possession a substance suspected to be Indian hemp.
He said that the offense contravened Section 5(b) of the Indian Hemp Act, of 1966.
The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge, while his lawyer, Mr Busuyi Ayorinde, pleaded with the court to grant his client bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.
The Magistrate, Mrs Olubunmi Bamidele, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N20,000, with one surety in like sum.
She adjourned the case till March 20 for a hearing.
