The Police in Nasarawa State on Monday arraigned a 45-year-old man,Yahaya Tanko, in a Masaka Upper Area Court for alleged defamation of character.
The defendant, who resides at Angwan Gada Masaka, is standing trial on a one-count charge of defamation before Mr Yabuku Ishaku.
The prosecutor, Frank Swem, told the court that the defendant’s brother, Musa, reported the matter at Divisional Police Headquarters in Masaka on December 12.
Swem said that the defendant had accused the complainant of stealing his missing child, hinging his accusation on claims by a herbalist.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened Section 392 of the Penal Code.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty and was granted bail by the judge in the sum of N100, 000 with a surety in like sum.
Ishaku said the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and must deposit two passport photographs.
He adjourned the case till January 8 for hearing.
