The police in south-west China have arrested a man for selling his one-year-old daughter online for £6,800 in order to pay off his gambling debts.
The unemployed suspect, identified by his surname Jiang, racked up over 60,000 yuan (£6,798) in gambling debts, Dailymail reports.
Jiang took his toddler daughter away in November 2018 and told his wife that the girl would be staying with her grandmother only for him to sell the child to a couple he found online.
Jiang’s wife, surnamed Wang, became suspicious after her husband refused her access to the child even by telephone.
She then went through her husband’s phone sometime in February and found a conversation he had with her daughter’s buyers.
This prompted her to report to the police in Qianling district as her husband also disappeared.
Jiang was later found at a hotel in Guiyang late February.
The child was located by police last Friday and brought home to her mother in Guiyang.
