May Edochie, the estranged wife of actor Yul Edochie, has threatened legal action against comedian Chidi Uzoma, popularly known as Baba De Baba, for defamatory statements made on Facebook.
In a pre-action notice shared by her lawyer on Instagram on Friday, titled “CEASE AND DESIST – DEFAMATION”, Baba De Baba was accused of making harmful claims, including allegations that May is HIV positive and a lesbian.
The letter read in part, “We represent MS. MARY EDOCHIE (herein referred to as our ‘Client’) on whose instruction and authority we write you this letter.
“It has come to our attention that you made defamatory and false statements about our Client.”
The notice detailed posts made between December 1 and December 11, 2024, where Baba De Baba alleged May traveled out of the country to engage in homosexual activities and claimed she was HIV positive.
One post, published on December 11 read:“Queen May is now in Ghana with her lesbian partners to look for men to sleep with because na men dey actually pay pass.
“Meanwhile, I heard she has HIV+. Ghanaian men, please use condom.”
The letter described the posts as “knowingly and maliciously false,” stating that they caused “substantial harm” to May’s business, character and reputation.
It also accused Baba De Baba of violating the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, which criminalises cyberbullying and cyberstalking.
The pre-action notice demands that Baba De Baba remove all defamatory statements from all social media platforms, tender an accurate public apology and retraction of the allegations and publish the apology prominently with prior approval.
He was given until midnight on Sunday, December 15, 2024, to comply.
The letter warned that failure to meet these demands would result in a civil action for damages without further notice.
In response, Baba De Baba posted on Facebook that while he is willing to apologise, he will not delete all the content.
He claimed May’s fans, known as May Nation, had been targeting Yul Edochie and Judy Austin in similar ways.
He added that someone else manages his Facebook page, making the removal process lengthy.
