Actress Mercy Johnson has publicly endorsed the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, as she campaigns for him in Edo State ahead of the upcoming September 21 governorship election.
In a video shared on social media on Friday, Mercy accompanied by her husband, politician Prince Okojie, rallied support for the APC in Ward 6 Irruekpen, Esan West Local Government Area.
She urged the crowd to vote for Okpebholo, criticising the region’s current state of essential services.
Speaking in Pidgin English, the actress said, “On September 21, una never tire? No light, no water, no good healthcare, no security, no good road.
“If you go vote for Senator Okpebholo, raise your hands. My husband say na who know me na e go carry first. I use God beg una, this campaign na operation one man tell the other, one woman tell the other. Edo must good. When you reach that field, na Senator Okpebholo na e you go vote for.”
The video has since gone viral, sparking a wave of reactions from Nigerians, many of whom criticised the actress for supporting the APC candidate.
One user, Wendy Adama commented, “She married a politician, so it’s expected, and no, she won’t be doing anything for the poor masses’ interest.”
Divine Duke expressed disappointment writing, “I’m unfollowing her right now.”
Amos Ojoma defended Johnson, stating, “If na your husband, you self go still support APC. Na who government no de favor de call am bad government. I no blame Mercy at all.”
Wilson Ikenna questioned, “Can someone still open their mouth to tell people to vote for APC? We don’t have party ideology and orientation in this country!”
A user identified as Jay added, “Aisha Buhari was even at a point against Buhari and the cabal controlling his government. Mercy has a choice, and we know what her choice is. Doesn’t matter, but we are here.”
