Nigeria National League side, Mighty Jets FC, have announced the demise of one of their player, John George, who died on Thursday in Kaduna after a brief illness.
George, a combative midfielder with an eye for goal, was until his death on loan at Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) heavyweights, Lobi Stars of Makurdi, from the Jos based outfit.
“The management of Mighty Jets FC of Jos has received with great shock the news of the demise of the club’s defensive midfielder, John George, who passed on this afternoon in Kaduna after a brief illness,” the club announced in a statement on Thursday.
“Management of Mighty Jets FC would discuss with Lobi Stars and the player’s family on the plans and arrangements as regards his burial.
“The entire management pray that God would grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss and also pray for the repose of his soul,” the statement added.
Spokesperson of Jets, Mbum Ferdinand, described the player “as a hard working and committed professional who was always respectful to officials and colleagues alike.”
George was said to have obtained clearance from Lobi Stars to return to Kaduna in order to treat himself following recurring cases of illness.
His last game for Lobi was in the 2-2 draw with Kano Pillars in an NPFL game at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi in March.
The player had previously kitted for Plateau United, before joining rivals Mighty Jets.
