Super Eagles skipper, John Obi Mikel, has returned to English football on a short-term deal at English Championship side, Middlesbrough.
The 31-year-old has been without a club since the end of the Chinese Super League season in November 2018, with the decision taken to sever ties with former club, Tianjin TEDA.
The Nigeria international spent the last two years in China.
Middlesbrough manager, Tony Pulis, spoke to the club’s official website after completing the transfer.
He said, “I’m pleased to get him in. He is a man with a lot of experience and quality.
“He has a winning mentality and he wants to be here and a part of what we are looking to achieve.”
Mikel Obi made the move to Asia in January 2017 after spending over 10 seasons at Chelsea.
During his time at Stamford Bridge he made 374 appearances and collected numerous major honours.
He is a two-time Premier League champion, three-time FA Cup winner, with Champions League, Europa League, and League Cup winners’ medals.
Mikel Obi is now expected to add his experience to Middlesbrough’s promotion quest as they currently sit fifth in England’s’ second division.
