South Africa’s representative Mia Le Roux has withdrawn from the Miss Universe competition due to health concerns.

The Miss South Africa organisation released a statement on Friday announcing her withdrawal.

Le Roux expressed her appreciation for the support she received from South Africans, describing the decision to step back as “incredibly challenging.”

“I am profoundly thankful for the unwavering support from South Africa during my time at Miss Universe. Making this decision has been incredibly challenging, knowing the dreams and hopes that have been placed upon me,” she said.

“However, I am deeply grateful to have the opportunity to focus on my health and recovery so that I may continue to serve my country with full strength.”

The organisation also voiced its support for Le Roux, highlighting her resilience during this difficult time.

“Mia has shown incredible courage and grace throughout this difficult period,” the organisation said.

“Her health and well-being are our utmost priority, and we stand by her side, dedicated to ensuring she regains her strength and returns to full health.”

The nature of her health issue remains undisclosed.

Mia Le Roux, 28, gained widespread attention in August when she made history as the first deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa. Her groundbreaking achievement was celebrated across the country but it also sparked controversy.

The celebration of Le Roux’s victory came in the wake of a high-profile incident involving contestant Chidimma Adetshina, who withdrew from the competition.

Chidimma who has Nigerian heritage faced significant online backlash over her roots.

The controversy escalated when the South African Home Affairs Ministry began an investigation into allegations that her mother may have committed identity theft.

Despite the controversy, Chidimma went on to compete in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant, ultimately winning the title.

Chidimma is now representing Nigeria at the international Miss Universe competition in Mexico with the grand finale set for Saturday.
