Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse who administered an injection to the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has narrated the events leading to his death while testifying before Justice C.A. Shotobi at the Coroner’s Court in Ikorodu, Lagos.
Ogedengbe told the court on Friday that she had stepped out to get additional medical supplies when she received a call that Mohbad was convulsing.
According to her, she was contacted by Ayobami Sodiq, also known as Spending, on September 12, 2024, to treat the singer at his Lekki residence.
She arrived at about 2:30 pm and observed a swollen cut on his right hand.
She explained that after administering a tetanus shot to his upper arm, Mohbad developed goosebumps. “I showed his wife (Omowunmi) the reaction, and she said it was his normal response to injections,” Ogedengbe stated.
The nurse said she then injected the singer with 4ml of paracetamol diluted with 1ml of water instead of diclofenac, considering his history of ulcers, and a slow 10ml dose of ceftriaxone to treat a bacterial infection.
She recalled that Mohbad started feeling discomfort after receiving the ceftriaxone and got up to vomit.
“After vomiting in the toilet, he returned to the room and sat on the floor, where I noticed the goosebumps on his body,” she testified.
Ogedengbe said there were four people in the room at the time: Mohbad, his wife, Ayobami and herself.
Concerned about his reaction, she asked Omowunmi why she had not mentioned his sensitivity to injections.
“Omowunmi then took Mohbad to the bathroom and began pouring water on his head,” she narrated.
Realising the gravity of the situation, Ogedengbe and Ayobami rushed to get medication for an allergic reaction but faced delays at the first pharmacy.
“After visiting another pharmacy and obtaining the necessary hydrocortisone injection and normal saline infusion, we returned to find Mohbad outside the house. By then, preparations were underway to take him to the hospital,” she explained.
Due to heavy traffic and a lack of available vehicles, the singer was transported on a motorcycle. “He was later declared dead on arrival by the medical team,” she said.
Ogedengbe added that hospital staff initially hesitated before attending to Mohbad, causing confusion.
His body was later taken home around 8 pm while they went to the Orchid Lekki Police Station for a death certificate before being directed to Ajiwe Police Station in Ajah.
After cross-examination by lawyers representing Mohbad’s family, his wife and the state, the court adjourned the case to March 21, 2024.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions has charged Ogedengbe and Sodiq with reckless and negligent acts under Section 251 (e) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
In contrast, a magistrate court in Sabo, Yaba, recently acquitted singer Abdulazeez Fashola, aka Naira Marley; music promoter Samson Balogun, aka Sam Larry; Owodunni Ibrahim, aka Primeboy; and Mohbad’s former manager, Opere Babatunde, of any involvement in the case.
