Singer Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, has stirred controversy after expressing displeasure over his late son’s decision to purchase land in his grandson Liam’s name.
A clip from Mr Aloba’s TikTok live session surfaced on social media on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, showing him questioning why Mohbad, born Ilerioluwa Aloba, made such a choice.
“Mohbad bought two plots of land at Elepe in Liam’s name, and I don’t know why. As a father, I never bought anything and put Mohbad’s name on it in my life, yet they bought the two plots of land in Liam’s name,” he said.
His remarks sparked backlash, with many social media users accusing him of prioritising personal interests over his late son’s intentions. Some interpreted his comments as an example of entitlement among some African parents.
One user wrote, “Some of us knew all along that it’s about property. Sad our attention was diverted. A man who was complaining about his condition just minutes after his son’s burial is now questioning his son’s decision. That boy lived among enemies disguised as family and friends.”
Another commented, “Most Nigerian men suffer from cognitive dissonance. Imagine being angry that you never bought anything in your son’s name, but he did the opposite for his child. Mohbad broke the cycle and built a life for his son, but he paid with his own life.”
A third added, “The truth is coming out. The properties were the issue all along. A father can buy properties in his child’s name, and the child can do the same for their own. It was Mohbad’s choice—even if he bought the land in Tinubu’s name, it’s nobody’s business.”
This development comes after Mohbad’s widow, Omowunmi, alleged in an interview with Chude Jideonwo that her father-in-law wanted to take control of the late singer’s assets.
Mr Aloba also claimed that many of Mohbad’s property documents are currently held by his mother-in-law, adding to the ongoing dispute.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, a court ruled that Naira Marley and his associate, Sam Larry, had no case to answer regarding Mohbad’s death.
However, the court ordered the prosecution of the nurse, Ayobami Sadiq, who administered the fatal injection, for reckless conduct.
Reacting to this, Mr Aloba stated that he had never met the nurse in person but had only heard about her online.
His statement followed allegations by Omowunmi that he had obstructed the nurse’s arrest.
