Commercial motorcyclists on Friday dragged a corpse into the office of the Governor of Cross River State, Benedict Ayade.
The motorcyclists were protesting the death of their colleague who was allegedly killed by members of a security task force.
They reportedly overpowered three security personnel at the gate, smashing windows as they tried to gain entrance into the governor’s office.
The deceased was reportedly beaten up by members of the task force until he became unconscious around Ikot Ansa in Calabar.
The unnamed deceased died while being taken to a health facility.
Armed soldiers from 13 Brigade of Nigerian Army and policemen from the nearby state police command soon arrived the governor’s office to contain the situation.
The reinforcements shot into the air to disperse the violent protesters as several arrests were made.
The body was later taken away by the police.
Cross River police spokesperson, Irene Ugbo, said the victim fell from his motorcycle and died when the task force team wanted to arrest him for violating the government ban on motorcycles plying major roads.
