The relationship between Nigeria music producer, Don Jazzy, and telecommunications company, MTN, was heading for the rock long before the latter dropped some artistes as brand ambassadors, qed.ng has learned.
Don Jazzy is among celebrities missing on the list of brand ambassadors for 2016/2017 released by the company on Thursday.
Other stars dropped Davido, Tiwa Savage, Dr. Sid, Sound Sultan, Banky W, KCee and Harrysong.
A highly placed source in MTN told our correspondent on Saturday that while Don Jazzy and others were dropped as ambassadors primarily to cut cost, the Mavin CEO had other issues with the company.
“The major issue we had with Don Jazzy was that he did not identify with the brand as much as the other ambassadors.
“He stayed away from many of our activation campaigns to the disappointment of management and some of our stakeholders,” the source who pleaded anonymity said.
Chief among the programmes Don Jazzy is alleged to have boycotted is Project Fame.
“While the likes of Banky W and others were readily available, Don Jazzy was elusive.
“His contract with us was worth N50million annually, but there was little we could do because of his closeness to one of our directors, Tunde Folawiyo.”
Don Jazzy and his kid brother, D’Prince, were signed as MTN ambassadors in 2013.
