The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) on Friday in Abuja announced the conferment of the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) on National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muiz Banire, and 20 others.
Three academics and 18 advocates made the final list of awardees.
Banire was commissioner of transport and later environment in Lagos State from 1999 to 2011.
Other prominent names on the list are Emeka Etiaba, son of former Governor of Anambra State, Virgy Etiaba; Chinwe Aguma, the attorney-general of Rivers State, and Dr Oladapo Olanipekun, son of former Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), President, Wole Olanipekun.
Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court and Secretary of the LPPC, Ahmed Saleh, said the Committee approved the award at its 119th meeting “as a mark of excellence to the under listed members of the legal profession.”
Saleh revealed that 124 applications were received this year.
The new SANs, Mr. Saleh said, would be sworn-in on September 21 at a special session of the Supreme Court to mark the beginning of the new legal year.
Also awarded are Ibrahim Bawa, Edward Ashiekaa, Benson Nwankwo, Joseph Bamigboye, Patrick Okolo, Maxwell Gidado, Adeniyi Adegbonmire, Tahir Mamman and Akinpelu Onigbinde.
Others are Samuel Zibiri, Aderibigbe Adedeji, Emmanuel Aguma, Olumuyiwa Akinboro, Gordy Uche, Uchechukwu Obi, Kehinde Eleja, Paul Idornigie and Abimbola Akeredolu the only female on the list
