Suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan made a bold return to Kogi Central on Tuesday, arriving at her homecoming rally by helicopter despite state-imposed restrictions on movement and public gatherings.
Defying a government ban on rallies, Akpoti-Uduaghan was welcomed by a massive crowd of supporters in Okehi Local Government Area, who waved placards and chanted slogans in her support.
Ahead of the event, security agencies had warned against holding the rally, but the senator remained resolute. “My dear people of Kogi Central, I look forward to our PEACEFUL Sallah celebrations today,” she posted on Facebook earlier that morning.
“However, should we be met with or infiltrated by violence, Nigerians should hold Gov Ododo, Yahaya Bello & SP Godswill Akpabio wholly responsible.”
Her remarks appeared to be a direct warning to Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, former Governor Yahaya Bello and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, whom she has accused of orchestrating intimidation against her.
Speaking to the crowd, she addressed concerns over her recall process, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of complicity.
“What I see INEC doing is aiding and guiding petitioners on how to perfect their illicit acts,” she said.
On attempts to prevent her from returning home, she declared: “Nobody and nothing can stop me from coming home. I’m an Ebira woman; this is my land. I’m the daughter of the late Jimoh Abdul Akpoti. I know my roots; I’m not a bastard, and I’m not afraid of anybody.”
Akpoti-Uduaghan, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is currently serving a six-month suspension from the Senate for alleged rule violations.
She also faces a potential recall, reportedly pushed by members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
