Senator Shehu Sani has warned constituents to ensure their representatives in the National Assembly are present to vote on the social media and hate speech bills.
The bills since introduction have met criticism, with the public saying government functionaries do not want to be criticised.
Sani, in a tweet on Tuesday, revealed that on the day the bills will be voted on, legislators who fear both social media and the executive would be absent.
“On the day that the Social Media & Hate Speech Bills will be passed into law, most of the seats in the Chambers of the Parliament will be empty. The legislators who fear both the social media & the govt will absent themselves. You must compel ur rep to be actively present,” he tweeted.
The former Kaduna South senator said in another tweet: “When controversial matters are to be debated or approved in the parliament on the orders of the executive, it’s usual on that day to find most of the seats in the Chamber unoccupied. Legislators who lack the courage to support or oppose it will enter, sign attendance & disappear.”
