Staff of the National Assembly on Tuesday morning protested over the non-payment of their N5.8 billion allowances.
The worker under the aegis of Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) had earlier threatened to stage a protest.
They blocked the entrances to the chambers of both the Senate and the House of Representatives at about 9:45 am.
Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremadu was prevented from going into the Senate chamber with the workers chanting “no sitting”.
As at press time, the staff were still there, chanting that there will be no sitting by both arms until their allowances are paid.
The National Assembly management had on Monday urged them not to embark on the planned strike, saying their concerns were being addressed.
Clerk to the National Assembly Mohammed Sani-Omolori made this known in a seven-page letter addressed to the staff through the association.
PASAN chairman Bature Musa, however, said the protests and picketing would end at 2 pm.
Mr Musa stated that the workers were not in a faceoff with lawmakers.
“National Assembly is a custodian of the law and we are not in this parliament to kick against the law. We are law-abiding citizens. Once it is 2 O’clock, we will return to our respective offices,” he said.
