The family of Taiwo Akinkunmi, designer of Nigeria’s national flag, has announced he will be buried next month.
Akinkunmi died on August 29, 2023, aged 87.
A statement released on Monday by his son Akinwumi Akinkunmi on the family’s behalf said the burial programme has been scheduled to hold between Wednesday, September 4 and Friday, September 6, 2024, assuring that a detailed burial arrangement would soon be communicated.
“We thank the Federal Government for sending the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Hon Idris Mohammed, to pay condolence to the family when the incident happened,” the family said.
While stating that they were still hopeful of hearing from the Federal Government as regards its promises in respect of the burial, the family requested that the Nigerian flag be flown at half-mast to give the departed Akinkunmi his last respects during the burial period.
The family thanked Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde for keeping his word to support the family in giving Akinkunmi a befitting burial.
They also appreciated the roles played by members of the seventh Oyo State House of Assembly, the chairman, Oyo State advisory council, Bolaji Ayorinde; and members of the council for standing by the family.
The family also thanked Senator Monsurat Sunmonnu and one Bolomope for what they did for Akinkunmi while he was alive and in the event of his death.
