The Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has renewed the operating license of the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria (MCSN) to continue functioning as a Collective Management Organization (CMO) for musical works and sound recordings.

The renewal, which took effect from January 1, 2025, ensures that MCSN can continue licensing and collecting royalties on behalf of its members.

In a letter dated January 16, 2025 and referenced NCC/ADM./364/T/256, the commission formally conveyed the renewal to MCSN, stating that, “the Nigerian Copyright Commission has approved the renewal of the license of the Musical Copyright Society Nigeria (Ltd/Gte), to operate as a Collective Management Organization in respect of rights in musical works and sound recording.

“This renewal is with effect from 1st January, 2025.”

The letter further states, “Please note that the renewal is subject to the provisions of the Copyright Act, 2022, and the Copyright (Collective Management Organizations) Regulations, 2007.”

The NCC had earlier, in a letter dated December 12, 2024, commended MCSN for its performance, particularly in the collection of licensing fees for works within its repertoire.

“The Commission commends MCSN’s performance, particularly in the collection of licensing fees for the use of works in your repertoire.”

“The Commission urges the Society to continue to build on its achievements, for the benefit of its members and affiliates and in line with global best practices.”

King Sunny Ade serves as the president of MCSN, while reggae musician Orits Williki chairs the board.

Other board members include media executive Kenny Ogungbe, flutist Tee Mac Iseli, Segun Alile, Mojisola Fayemi, Mike Mbala and Kola Olulana.

The organisation is led by Chief Executive Officer Mayo Ayilaran.
