Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has presented the staff of office and other instruments of appointment to Oba Gbolahan Lawal, making him the official 15th Oniru of Iruland.
Mr Sanwo-Olu presented the staff of office in a closely-guarded ceremony on Sunday.
The new Oniru is on the throne 85 years after the kingship left his Abisogun clan.
Sanwo-Olu said the traditional institution would forever remain a strong link to Nigeria’s heritage.
“There is no doubt that the future of Iru Kingdom continues to be bright and promising, and that the ascension today of His Royal Majesty, Oba Abdul-Wasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II, marks the start of the next phase of the journey into that future,” he said.
His appointment was made official last Friday following ratification by the Lagos State Executive Council.
As a police officer, Oba Lawal served as Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to former Lagos governor, Bola Tinubu.
He retired voluntarily in 2008 as a superintendent of police.
The new monarch succeeds late Oba Idowu Abiodun, former Oniru of Iruland, who passed on in 2019 aged 82.
Oba Lawal resigned his appointment as Commissioner for Agriculture last Thursday, preparatory to taking over as the first-class monarch of Iruland, which covers Victoria Island, Lagos.
