The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has agreed to cover the $50,000 cost of treatment for ex-Super Eagles skipper and coach, Christian Chukwu.
This move confirms reports that he is suffering from a severe health challenge.
News reports earlier indicated that Chukwu needed the sum of $50,000 for a round trip to America covering surgery and medication.
The Nigerian Football Federation has since stepped in to assure that they would provide support for the football stalwart.
The football house made the announcement via a tweet on Sunday.
The president of the Nigeria football governing body, Mr. Amaju Pinnick, responded to the disheartening news saying: “I am not in Nigeria presently but I have asked the NFF Acting President, Barr. Seyi Akinwunmi to take full charge and ensure that this matter is treated promptly.
“It was for this kind of development that I spoke about the welfare foundation for our legends at the 2nd AITEO-NFF Awards in Lagos on 1st April 2019. The NFF would always be there to lend support to our legends in their hour of need.”
Christian Chuwku is fondly remembered for his role as the captain of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations –winning team.
He later served as the assistant coach of the first Nigerian team to win a FIFA World Cup trophy at the FIFA U16 World Cup in China in 1985.
