NiDCOM boss Abike Dabiri celebrates Nigerian chess prodigies for US tournament victory

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has congratulated young Nigerian chess players from the Chess in Slums Initiative for their outstanding performance at the 12th Annual Chess & Community Conference in the United States.

In a statement on Tuesday, Dabiri-Erewa praised Chess in Slums founder Tunde Onakoya for his dedication to empowering underprivileged children through chess.

“These kids have proven that talent knows no boundaries. Their victory is an inspiration, and we must continue to support initiatives that nurture our youth’s potential,” she said.

She also took to Instagram to celebrate the young players, sharing photos of them and writing, “Our young champions have done it again!

“Nigerian kids from the Chess in Slums Initiative have conquered the 12th Annual Chess & Community Conference in the U.S., bringing home medals and scholarships.

“A huge shoutout to Tunde Onakoya for his dedication to transforming lives through chess. This victory proves that talent knows no boundaries!”

Founded by Onakoya, a Guinness World Record holder for the longest chess marathon, the Chess in Slums Initiative is a non-profit organisation that introduces less privileged children to the game of chess.

The initiative aims to foster critical thinking, boost confidence, and create opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
