UK’s Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has shared her negative encounters with the Nigerian police, recounting an incident where officers allegedly stole her brother’s shoes and watch.
In an interview with The Free Press, which gained attention on Saturday, Mrs Badenoch compared her experiences with the police in Nigeria and the UK.
The opposition leader said she trusts the UK police but does not share same sentiment with the Nigerian counterpart.
“My experience with the police in Nigeria was very negative,” she said, “and coming to the UK, my first experience with the police was very positive. The police in Nigeria would rob us.”
Highlighting the challenges of corruption and poverty in Nigeria, she said: “I remember the police stealing my brother’s shoes and his watch. It’s a very poor country, so people do all sorts of things.”
Badenoch has been in the news for criticising the Nigerian society and politics.
Recently, Vice President Kashim Shettima asked her to “remove the Kemi” in her name if she was not proud of her origin. Badenoch replied through her aide that she speaks the truth and would not be the “PR for Nigeria”.
