Ahead of the inauguration of US President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris, some Nigerians living in the United States have picked a Nigerian fabric to be used as ‘aso ebi’.
The term ‘aso ebi’ is coined from two Yoruba words – aso meaning ‘cloth’ and ebi, which means ‘family’. It is worn by relatives and close friends during occasions as a form of support and solidarity.
Videos have surfaced online showing the attire with Biden and Harris’s names imprinted on the fabrics with the inscription ‘Victory Party’.
In one of the videos, two Nigerian men whose identity could not be immediately confirmed are seen saying they were taking theirs to fashion designers.
“So, aso ebi is ready now. Can you see this? It is ready. I am taking mine to the tailor for the inauguration,” one of them said.
Another Nigerian, who spoke in Yoruba, said, “We will rock this. We will sweep away all those with negative mindsets out of the White House.”
Biden and Harris will be inaugurated on January 20.
About 20,000 security operatives will be deployed for the ceremony after the Capitol riot which claimed five lives.
President Dnald Trump has already broken away from tradition after announcing he would not be attending Biden’s inauguration.
