Nigerians have attacked the Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) over a policy which requires a fee of at least N25, 000 for online adverts.

The new policy states that all Nigerian brands are now required to “fulfil all necessary obligations” by the council before placing their adverts on the digital space which includes social media and websites.

For any ad concept to get clearance the advertisers must pay a minimum fee of ₦25,000.

Acting Registrar of APCON, Ijedi Iyoha, told Techpoint during a recent phone interview that before any Nigerian brand can put up ads online, it needs to first get approval from the council.

The council is believed to be looking into including small business owners who advertise online.

Defaulters face six months imprisonment or a fine of ₦500,000 from the council.

Nigerians have attacked the council on Twitter, saying it does not have consideration for the growth of small businesses.
