Reactions have started pouring on social media over the emergence of Mia Le Roux as the winner of Miss South Africa 2024 beauty pageant.

Le Roux defeated nine predominantly black models to be crowned winner at Sun Bet Arena, Time Square, Menlyn, Pretoria on Saturday.

The 28-year-old is the first deaf person to be crowned Miss South Africa. She is a descendant of Dutch settlers in South Africa.

She will receive a cash prize of $53,371 (R1 million), a Mercedes Benz car and a luxury fully furnished apartment.

The pageant drew widespread attention after one of the finalists Chidimma Adetshina withdrew over her Nigerian ancestry.

Adetshina explained in an interview that her father was a Nigerian and her mother a South African of Mozambican descent.

The 23-year-old law student was born in Soweto and grew up in Cape Town.

For several weeks her roots dominated centre of discussion on social media, as many people, including one cabinet minister, questioned her right to represent the country.

South African Department of Home Affairs also said it was investigating whether Adetshina’s mother committed fraud and identity theft.
