Nigerians have remembered the late Moshood Abiola who was said to have won the 1993 presidential election but the results were annulled by former military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida.
President Muhammadu Buhari and other world leaders have gathered at Eagles Square, venue of the 2019 National Democracy Day celebration on Wednesday, to remember the iconic day in the nation’s history.
Mr Buhari had on June 6 awarded Abiola posthumously with Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), an honour reserved only for presidents.
Buhari also shifted the annual celebration of Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12 in honour of Abiola.
Nigerians on Twitter have begun sharing their thoughts about the man referred to as ‘the president that never was.’
