Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was on Friday released from Kuje Prison after meeting the bail conditions set for him by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.
Three persons – Chairman of the Senate’s South East Caucus, Eyinnaya Abaribe; a Jewish priest, Immanuel Shalom, and an accountant and Abuja resident, Tochukwu Uchendu – stood as sureties for the separatist leader.
Kanu was granted bail on Tuesday on health grounds by Justice Binta Nyako who barred him from granting press interview, holding rallies or being in a gathering of more than 10 persons.
The Radio Biafra operator was arrested in Lagos on October 18, 2015 by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The Federal Government subsequently charged him to court for treason alongside Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi.
Out of the 11-count charges initially filed against the defendants, six were struck out for being incompetent.
The three other defendants are still in custody while the court has fixed July 11 and 12 for commencement of trial.
Former Minister of Transportation, Osita Chidoka, drove Kanu out of prison on Friday.
