Group chief executive officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL) Mele Kyari has not been suspended by President Bola Tinubu, the company’s spokesman has said.
Kyari was on Saturday rumoured to have been suspended from his position following similar action taken against governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria Godwin Emefiele.
The CBN governor was suspended to allow investigation of his office and reforms in the financial sector of Nigeria’s economy, a statement by the director of information, office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Willie Bassey said on Friday.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect.
“This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy,” the statement said.
Hours after Emefiele’s arrest had been confirmed, Kyari was rumoured to have also been suspended.
But the spokesman of the NNPCL Garba Muhammad told Daily Post that it was not true.
“It is the handiwork of mischief markers,” he was quoted as saying.
Vanguard quoted a source in the Presidency as saying, “There is no iota of truth in that post claiming that the President has suspended the NNPC GCEO. There is nothing to be worried about because the Petroleum Industry Act is clear on how the NNPC GCEO or any member of the NNPC Board could be removed.”
