A court in north-western Germany has sentenced a nurse to life imprisonment for the murder of 85 patients in his care.
Judge Sebastian Buehrmann, while handing the sentence on Thursday, called Niels Hoegel’s killing spree “incomprehensible”.
Mr Hoegel is believed to be the most prolific serial killer in the country’s post-war history.
The 42-year-old killed patients selected at random with lethal injections between 2000 and 2005 until his arrest.
The court heard that Hoegel liked to put patients into cardiac arrest because he enjoyed the feeling of being able to resuscitate them.
The nurse was charged with 100 counts of murder but found guilty on 85.
After his seven-month trial, Hoegel apologised for the pain and suffering he had caused with his “terrible deeds”.
