A serving corps member in Lagos has raised concerns over alleged threats following her viral video criticizing the administration of President Bola Tinubu over rising inflation and economic hardship.
The corps member, who posted the video on TikTok via @talktoraye, expressed frustration over the economic situation, stating that prices of goods and services have skyrocketed, making life unbearable for many Nigerians.
“If a lot of Nigerians come out and start speaking about what we are going through, maybe changes will be made in the government.
“I don’t know if there is any other president as terrible as you, but you are such a terrible president. I want to know, what is the government doing about this increase?
“Is there going to be a particular time when prices will stop going up?” she said.
She lamented the rising costs of basic items, noting that a crate of eggs, which used to cost N800, now sells for N6,500.
She also complained about high transportation, electricity, and security costs, saying her NYSC allowance is not enough to cover her expenses.
Following the video’s widespread circulation, the corps member claimed she began receiving threatening messages, allegedly from NYSC officials.
In another video, she was seen answering a call from an official who scolded her, saying: “Are you normal? Keep quiet and bring down the video you posted.”
She later shared screenshots of threatening messages she had received, writing:
“Deleting this content is of no use because they already know me. However, deleting it means whatever they do to me, nobody would know.
“If they decide to give me a hefty punishment, nobody would know because I used my own hands to cover it by deleting what I started.”
She expressed fear for her safety, adding:
“All I did was lament, all I did was complain. Why are they looking for me like I’m a criminal? I didn’t sign off my freedom of speech by becoming an NYSC Corper.”
The corps member revealed that she had been summoned to report to the NYSC office on Monday but questioned the intimidation and harassment she was facing for speaking out.
As of the time of this report, NYSC is yet to respond to the allegations.
