The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has withdrawn all corps members serving at Government Day Secondary School, Kulende in the Ilorin East Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The decision follows allegations of assault on a female corps member by teachers at the school.
Reports indicate that the female corps member, whose name has been withheld, was attacked by some teachers for allegedly failing to greet them. The incident reportedly escalated, with the teachers beating and stripping her during an altercation that occurred when she visited the school to collect her clearance letter.
Eyewitnesses claim that after scolding her, one teacher physically assaulted the corps member, tearing her NYSC uniform. Another teacher allegedly joined in and slapped her.
In response, the director general of NYSC Brigadier General Y. D. Ahmed visited the school on Monday before inspecting members of the 2024 Batch C, Stream 2, at the orientation camp in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area.
Concerned for the safety of all corps members, he directed their temporary withdrawal from both the junior and senior arms of the school.
Confirming the development to PUNCH, the NYSC public relations officer for Kwara State Oladipo Morakinyo said: “Yes, it is true that all the NYSC members serving in the school have been withdrawn from the school temporarily pending the outcome of the investigation of the case by the panel set up by the government on the alleged assault on one of the corps members.
“Though the corps member assaulted is serving in the junior school, we have to withdraw all the corps members serving in the senior school so as to protect them from being attacked.”
Kwara State Government has condemned the incident and set up an investigative panel to address the issue.
