Publisher of ThisDay newspaper and Arise TV Nduka Obaigbena and former presidential spokespersons Reuben Abati and Femi Adesina on Tuesday attended a thanksgiving service held in Lagos to mark 10 years of the death of a former presidential spokesperson Remi Oyo.
Oyo died on October 1, 2014, following an illness. She was president of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) and managing director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
She was also the presidential spokesperson during the administration of President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The thanksgiving service was held at the Catholic Church of Presentation, Ikeja.
The managing director of NAN, Ali Ali, was represented at the occasion by the head of Lagos office of NAN, Adeleye Ajayi.
A former head of civil service of the federation, Stephen Oronsaye; NGE president, Eze Anaba; and former editor-in-chief of NAN, Isaac Ighure, were also among the dignitaries who participated in the service.
In his sermon, Rev. Fr. Vincent Olofinkua of the Catholic Church of Presentation described Oyo as a distinguished human who impacted many lives.
“Oyo’s life, times and legacies ought to resonate in people’s daily approach to life to make a better society,” the cleric said.
He described Oyo as generous and humane, adding that she used her position and resources to help people across tribes and backgrounds.
Her widower Vincent Oyo told NAN that his family missed his late wife.
“Ten years is a time of healing. With the passage of time, the pain of her departure is going. The grace of God has been sustaining us,” he said.
