Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa has dismissed speculations about his governorship ambition, emphasising his commitment to strengthening the ruling party in the state.
Obasa addressed the rumour on Thursday, shortly after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu presented the state’s 2025 budget proposal of ₦3,005,935,198,401, dubbed the “Budget of Sustainability.”
Sanwo-Olu outlined the key components of the budget which include total revenue of ₦2,597,034,000,000, deficit financing of ₦408,902,000,000, recurrent expenditure of ₦1.239 trillion (41%) and capital expenditure of ₦1.766 trillion (59%).
The revenue will be sourced from ₦1,970,897,000,000 in internally generated revenue and ₦626,137,000,000 in federal transfers.
Reacting to the budget, Obasa acknowledged the economic challenges faced by Nigerians and urged citizens to remain optimistic as President Bola Tinubu’s administration implements recovery strategies.
Addressing the governorship rumour, Obasa clarified that his efforts to mobilise support under the “mandate platform” have been misinterpreted as personal ambition.
He said, “Becoming governor is secondary, it is something that I have not given serious consideration. Nevertheless, that does not mean I am too young or lack experience to run; whereas, those who have been before me are not better off.”
The speaker reaffirmed his focus on promoting the party’s values and mission, urging detractors to desist from distorting his intentions.
Earlier, lawmakers at the plenary passed a vote of confidence in Obasa.
