Obasa missing at Lagos assembly as Meranda assumes office amid tight security

Mojisola Meranda

The Lagos State House of Assembly witnessed a pivotal moment on Monday as newly installed Speaker Mojisola Meranda officially assumed office, following her election after the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa on January 13.

Mrs Meranda arrived at the assembly complex flanked by supportive lawmakers who rallied around her in a show of solidarity. Her move into the speaker’s office followed the endorsement of her leadership by the majority of House members.

The absence of Mr Obasa, who had earlier described his removal as unconstitutional and vowed to reclaim the speakership, added intrigue to the day’s events. Despite his assertions, the impeached lawmaker did not appear at the assembly, leaving questions about his next course of action.

Ahead of the day’s plenary session, the assembly complex was under heavy security. Officers from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were strategically stationed to maintain order.

Vehicular and pedestrian movements were restricted, and rigorous stop-and-search procedures were enforced at all entrances. Only individuals with proper identification were granted access, following a directive issued by the acting clerk’s office on Sunday.

Meranda, who had served as deputy speaker before her elevation, received a warm welcome from assembly members. Several lawmakers accompanied her to her office, symbolising a unified front under her leadership.

Photographs of jubilant lawmakers with the new speaker and celebrations within the complex underscored the mood of acceptance and optimism.

Obasa, removed by 32 of the 40 lawmakers over allegations of high-handedness, tardiness, and abuse of office, had addressed supporters over the weekend, maintaining his claim to the office. However, his absence on Monday has raised speculation about his strategy moving forward.

Meranda has pledged to restore stability to the House and ensure the smooth discharge of legislative duties under her leadership.
