Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday showed off his football skills when he participated in a novelty match to celebrate his 85th birthday at the five-a-side football pitch of Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The celebrant, who was the captain of the OOPL team, played against the Ogun State Government team led by Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele.
The ex-President scored two goals as his side defeated their opponents 4-2.
Speaking to newsmen after the match, Obasanjo appreciated God for his fitness in spite of his age.
He urged everyone, especially the elderly, to inculcate what he tagged DREMS – diet, rest, exercise, medical examination and social interactions.
These, he said, were the secrets behind his agility and fitness, even as an octogenarian.
The event which is part of activities marking Obasanjo’s 85th birthday celebration, saw guests such as the 91-year-old President of Benin Republic Nicephore Soglo, former minister of justice and attorney-general of the federation, Bayo Ojo, among others sports enthusiasts.
