Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has arrived at the state House of Assembly, with hundreds of supporters.

The governor arrived on Thursday alongside his deputy Philip Shaibu and other top government officials.

Mr Obaseki is believed to have visited the assembly to show support to lawmakers who stand by him.

The house of assembly has been divided since the cold war ensued between a former governor of the state Adams Oshiomhole and Obaseki, his successor.

On Wednesday, the deputy speaker of the house Yekini Idiaye was impeached for aligning with Mr Oshiomhole’s preferred candidate for the governorship position, Osagie Ize-Iyamu.

It was also gathered that Obaseki’s presence at the assembly was to prevent 14 members of the All Progressives Congress from taking their seats in the assembly.

The elected members have been isolated by Obaseki since last year and prevented from taking their oath of office. Speaker Frank Okiye was elected by nine other members and inaugurated at night.

Policemen had earlier on Thursday taken over the assembly.

However, addressing his supporters, Obaseki said: “I want to assure you that as governor of the state, I will do everything within my power to protect the sovereignty of the House.

“Nigeria is governed by the constitution and me. Mr. President has always said we must follow the rule of law and do things according to the law.

“Nobody is above the Constitution of our country and so go about your regular duty as a parliament, the way Constitution prescribed.

“For us as Executive, we will use the instrument available to us constitutionally to protect the House and the state.”
