The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has discredited a photograph being circulated on social media with claims that it was taken by socialite Obi Iyiegbu aka Obi Cubana in its office.
Obi Cubana was only released on Thursday following his arrest on Monday and subsequent detention. The businessman was questioned on allegations of money laundering and tax evasion.
The viral picture shows Obi Cubana in a selfie with a crowd described as staff of the EFCC.
But the agency’s spokesman Wilson Uwujaren said in a statement on Friday that the EFCC had nothing to do with the photograph.
“The said picture captioned: EFCC Crew poses for quick photograph with billionaire socialite and businessman, Obi Cubana, was not taken in EFCC facility and the people therein are unknown to the Commission.
“The Commission warns the public not to be misled by another mischievous stunt by Cubana’s publicists,” Mr Uwujaren said.
Throughout Obi Cubana’s time with investigators, several celebrities including Davido and 2face stood in solidarity with him, attesting to his clean record.
His wife Ebele Iyiegbu described her husband as a hardworking man in an Instagram post.
Obi Cubana’s lavish funeral for his mother in July had raised fears the EFCC might come calling. The Anambra-born billionaire owns a chain of businesses that includes nightclubs in Lagos and Abuja.
