Gunmen on Tuesday engaged the convoy of Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano in a shootout for about one hour in Ihiala area of the state.
Mr Obiano had just arrived at the venue of a rally set up by the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) at Odoata Central School field, Ihiala when the gunmen opened fire.
The number of casualties had yet to be confirmed.
Anambra has witnessed increased violence ahead of the November 6 governorship election.
Confirming the attack, Anambra police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga said one Ak-47 rifle, two magazines with 30 rounds of ammunition and a Toyota Hilux van were recovered from the attackers.
In a statement, Anambra commissioner for information and public enlightenment Don Adinuba said the gunmen were repelled by the police and soldiers.
He said the gunmen ran into the large premises of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital which is opposite the campaign ground.
“They suffered serious injuries, even though they managed to shoot a gallant soldier,” Mr Adinuba said.
Meanwhile, Obiano has commended his security detail for repelling the attack.
Governorship candidate of APGA Prof. Charles Soludo was attacked by gunmen in March during a party event. Although he escaped unhurt three policemen died in the attack.
